The core of the Choose Civility initiative comprises activities and events that enable people and organizations to engage in experiences that inspire them to incorporate the Principles of Civility into their lives.

Choose Civility Week  (week of October 4, 2010) - An entire week in the early fall will focus on Choose Civility by encouraging businesses, organizations, government agencies, educational institutions, and individuals to address civil behavior within their sphere of influence.

Choose Civility Symposium (October 2010) - This annual event assembles approximately 500 community leaders and citizens to foster mutual respect for the diverse values and beliefs of all persons and groups, and to create productive public discussion of issues. This year’s symposium theme is the role of civility in democracy, at various points in time and across cultures, culminating with a discussion of civility in the current political process. Civility is a crucial factor in promoting change and peaceful solutions to issues that challenge democracy worldwide.  The event will include the Choose Civility Awards, chosen from community-wide nominations of individuals who demonstrate outstanding examples of any of the 15 Principles of Civility.  Join us for a morning of engaging and provocative discussion led by a moderator.  Learn from a select panel of scholars, as well as from an interview with politicians about their responsibilities as leaders and the costs of incivility in the political process.

Choose Civility Awards - Open to community-wide nominations, Choose Civility Awards will recognize outstanding examples of civility among individuals of notable achievement and demonstration of any of the 15 Principles of Civility. Nominations are accepted June through September, and up to ten awards will be presented at the 2010 Choose Civility Symposium.  Specific criteria, guidelines, and nomination forms coming soon.
